RE: Anyone in Denali this week for the 4th?

To drive to Tek, we have a special pass and have to stay 3 nights. You could catch the shuttle bus in there for a cost.

RE: need for locking gas cap?

We haven't had anyone try to steal our gas or diesel anywhere in town here in Anchorage. We don't have locks on any of our vehicles. It is your personal preference and if it gives you piece of mind, then do it. We do put our gas can and generator in a locking compartment when we are not in our campsite but feel that is just common sense.

RE: Anyone in Denali this week for the 4th?

Ok, let us know how the campground is. I am glad to hear they are opening when I was told. Have a great bus trip. We will look for you when we get there on the 3rd. We will be in a Big Horn with a silver dodge.

RE: Boarding a dog in Anchorage

You might look up VCA Veterinary Hospitals. We use the East Side VCA on Boniface for our vet services and they are great with the animals. I know they have boarding also, but don't know how much. They also give a military discount if you can qualify for that.

RE: Valdez vs. Seward

For us personally, it is Seward. Valdez is about 6-7 hours away from Anchorage and Seward is only about 2 1/2. Both have RV parks available. In Seward there is the first come, first serve water front park. It is run by the city and is right on the bay. It is 25.00/night with elec. and water. There is a dump station across the street from the park. There are many other nice campgrounds in the Seward area. You can fish both places but in Seward there are more trips out to the Kenai Fjords. I highly recommend the Kenai Fjords Cruises Northwestern Glacier Cruise. We took the cruise the end of May and saw orcas, humpbacks, dall porpoise, a black bear, several mountain goats, harbor seals, sea lions, and of course otters and many type of sea birds, the puffins are my favorites. Valdez has a nice museum. Seward has the Alaska Sealife Center, a small museum, a beach that is rocky but can be walked on. About 6 miles out of town is Exit Glacier that is a nice area. There is a small gift shop there and you can walk almost to the face of the glacier (within 10 feet, there are warning signs to not get too close). At the Miller's landing area, south of Seward, there is a nice hiking trail, if you like to hike. Seward can be cloudy and breezy but so was Valdez when we were there last summer.

RE: what did you name your dog and why

Our dog is Buddy. The person I bought him from said he would make my kids a great buddy and he has been for 13 years now.

RE: On The Road To Alaska

I finally have seen a few out of state rv's this weekend. But parks are not full except for us locals on weekends. no problem getting a space. A friend of mine went unannounced to the kenai this weekend and had no problem getting a space. I've seen lot's of empty spaces around anchorage today. Heck, even the walmart has parking space this year. They are all in the base and post campgrounds. We drove through them last night and they were full.

RE: Bighorn by Heartland, your thoughts

We just bought a Big Horn 3400 RE in March. We love it. Haven't had any problems yet. We haven't had to deal with the manufacturer yet but have heard great things about them. We really like the quality of build inside and out. These units are well thought out in design.

RE: Civil War Battlefield Trip Report (long)

Thanks for sharing your trip. I would love to do that trip once we move back to the lower 48. In my family tree research I have found at least 8 ancestors that fought in the Civil War. One was in Gettysburg and Appamatox Courthouse.

RE: Has your senior doggie found the "fountain of youth"?

We have a chow who just turned 13 in April. He had his check up last week and the vet said all of his wellness tests came back like a dog 2 or 3 years old. He was getting to where he was slowing down some and she gave him a prescription of Rimadyl(anti-inflammatory) and he has been much better in the 5 days he has been on it. He loves to go camping and we found a ramp at Petco to help him get into the truck and up into the camper (we have 3 steps to go up). If he sees up gathering up stuff for a trip, he will follow us around the house whining so we don't forget to take him.

RE: Happy Anniversaries! When are yours?

Feb 13 was 18 years for us. We have camped together regularly for the last 7 years. I camped with my parents and grandparents when I was a kid.

RE: Things left on the highway

We used to go to Sheppard when my husband was stationed at Dyess in Abilene to shop at the BX. At that time my grandparents lived between Seymour and Goree so they would babysit for us to have a weekend get-away. PM material. Sorry to have offended you. ???????????? Of all the posts on this thread, this one fascinates me the most..... guess I'm just nosey. :@ Well, I just apologized for offending this member, not a moderator, who felt I was wrong by posting a response to another member's question in this post. No problems.

RE: Things left on the highway

When we first picked up our toyhauler at the dealer in Wichita Falls, Texas, we drove about 50 miles to my cousins house in Seymour, Texas to show them our new trailer. My cousin looked at our truck bumper and picked up the pry bar for the weight distro hitch and asked if that was something important. We lived in Wichita Falls for 17 years!!!! Are you from there? I was born in Seymour and lived there until I was in 1st grade(1977). We then moved 20 miles west of Haskell, (Old Glory). I still have quite a bit of family in the WF, Seymour and Haskell areas.

RE: Things left on the highway

We have lost a refrigerator vent cover off of the then brand new toyhauler somewhere between Sioux Falls and the place that has the big stretch car sign next to a truck stop. Our daughter who was 14 at the time, thought both of the latches needed to be turned the same way but they didn't. Once we weren't in an RV but dh was in a 24' Uhaul truck when the people in front of him lost their plastic lawnchairs while driving down I-44 near Joplin, MO. We have also been lucky in not losing somethings. RE: Hard plastic expandable sewer hose, does it work?

We have the rhino hose shown above and it works fine. We bought it at Walmart.
